About Us… and How We Got Started!

Hello, I am Wanda Ince, founder of Serenity Senior Care—a home health care agency for seniors and older adults.

Please indulge me for the next few minutes while I share my story with you and reveal the circumstances that moved me to start this company.

I was born in Barbados, West Indies, and migrated to the United States in 1971. After graduating High School in Brooklyn, New York, I attended Long Island University to study Business Management.

Until a few years ago, I was employed as an Operations Manager with JPMorgan Chase Bank. My position was eliminated as part of a reorganization following a merger. As a manager, I established an outstanding record of accomplishments and was able to motivate and mentor my staff to surpass established goals and objectives.

Why Home Health Care?

A few years ago, I became sensitive to the needs and struggles of senior citizens who wished to be cared for at home. I saw my own mother, who at the time lived with my sister who worked two jobs, struggles to maintain her own independence.

I recognized that when my sister went off to work, my mother was left alone for hours at a time. To help out, my other siblings and I would call mom throughout the day to make sure she was okay.

In September 2005, I made a call to Life Alert to have a monitor installed in my sister’s home to monitor mother’s whereabouts, so that in case of an emergency, help would be available to her. A few months after making that call, the institution where I worked downsized their operations and I found myself out of a job. I was unable to continue with my initial plans for providing this service to my mother.

Then, in January 2006, my mom fell in the house. Unable to help herself, she laid on the floor for hours until my sister returned home and found her trying to reach the phone. She was too weak to dial for help.

Mother died a few hours later that evening and I have not been able to forgive myself for not getting her that lifeline.

The Inspiration

After losing my mother, I knew immediately that I wanted to do something in her memory. It’s amazing how important it is to have a caregiver to look after your loved ones and assist them with their physical needs. I came to the realization that no person should lose a family member or a loved one for the lack of adequate help.

So in February of 2006, I started to focus on making this realization a reality by creating Serenity Senior Care. The company is dedicated to helping seniors and older adults live a more independent life through senior care in New Jersey. When I founded SSC, I truly believed it was meant to be.

Past Experience: In my previous job, the experience that I gained in teaching others to work effectively has proven to be an invaluable asset. I have found that trust, loyalty, and dedication are the essential keys to success in this industry. I know that my past experience will serve me well in these endeavors.

Personal Interaction: In order to make my clients feel comfortable, I make sure that I dedicate time to them prior to servicing their need. Doing this ensures that the right caregiver is matched with each client’s unique personality.

Personal Fulfillment: This is the kind of business that makes you feel good because you know you’ve helped someone, even after long hours of work. At the end of the day, I know that I have directly helped to make the life of a senior citizen better. As my business continues to grow, I never want to stop my hands-on involvement with the seniors we care for, their families and my team.

To further give back to my community, I volunteer eight hours a month to Montclair Senior Citizen Activity Center in New Jersey. I know that I cannot undo what has been done, but I can bring laughter and some comfort to those seniors I work with at the center.
